Either Run the Day or the Day Runs You

Quote by Jim Rohn. There is enough junk and busy work that will pop up every single day to keep you busy and prevent you from taking action on your goals for many lifetimes. If you are going to get anywhere you’ve got to learn to master your time and take control of your own schedule. No matter what is going on out there.

Life is hectic, right? You run after your responsibilities and you end up running yourself ragged. It’s no wonder that stress levels shoot up and patience wanes. The answer isn’t as straightforward as it sounds, but if you’re ready to take control of your life, the answer is yes. Running gives you the time to think and plan; to look at your life from a different perspective and change things for the better. But where do you start? Here are 5 simple mantras that will help you run the day or let the day run you:

Don’t say yes when you mean no

Are you constantly saying yes to commitments that you don’t really want to do? Perhaps you’re afraid to say no – because you’ve never learned how to do it. Or are you saying yes to people who aren’t actually in your life? If so, you might be causing more harm than good with your time and your energy. This is a huge time waster, not just because you’re missing out on opportunities, but because you’re wasting your time on people who aren’t worth it. How do you fix it? You could ask people to put their agreements in writing so there’s no confusion, but if you’re confident in your own boundaries, that works too. Saying no can be scary – we’ve all been put in situations where we’ve been forced to be assertive. But it’s worth taking the time to do it.

Show up to the things you say you will

You’ve promised to be at an event, but every time there’s a situation that would bring you in contact with that person, you chicken out. You keep putting it off and saying you’re going to go there, but you never do. And the result? If you do eventually show up, you’re frustrated and annoyed with yourself for letting it slip again. But if you show up when you say you will, it sets a good example for others. It makes you look good in the eyes of whoever you’re saying it to. And above all, it makes you accountable. Whether it’s to yourself, or to a friend or family member, it makes you a person who keeps your word.

Stop comparing and just be happy with your life right now

We all have a tendency to compare ourselves to other people and wonder what they have that we don’t. But why spend your energy in that direction? It’s not going to make you happy. It might make you momentarily happy, but it’s going to end up making you miserable because you’ll always be comparing yourself to others and feeling like you’re not measuring up. You’re not going to be happy if you spend your day wondering what you’re missing. If you want to be happy, you need to be where you are, now. If you’re not wholeheartedly happy with where you are, there’s no way you’re going to be able to find a way to make things better. Stop looking for the next thing and find a way to be happy with what you have.

Take every opportunity that comes your way

Sometimes you have to jump at the chance, even if it feels like it’s a last-minute decision. You have to go with your gut and your intuition, even if it feels like everything is lined up against you. You have to go with what feels right to you, even if it’s not the thing that everyone else is doing. You have to go with the opportunity to your heart because the person or thing who will be most benefited from that opportunity is not necessarily the one who gave it to you. You have to do what you want to do, even if it feels like you’re taking a leap of faith. You have to take every opportunity that comes your way because you never know when that one opportunity is all it would take for you to make it big. It could be the stepping-stone to a major breakthrough.

Lose the baggage of the past – or it will weigh you down forever

If there’s anything you need to let go of in your life, do it. If there’s something you need to add to your list of experiences, do it. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in your past; it’s something that you created. You can let it weigh you down or you can let it open the door to new opportunities. You can let it come between you and the future, or you can let it go. You have to let go of the past if you want to move on. It’s not going to make you happy if you hang on to it.

Bottom line

No one can hold your hand and make you happy. You have to make it happen. How? You have to be happy with where you are, now. You have to find something that you love to do. You have to keep pushing yourself to grow and learn new things. If you do those two things, you’ll be a happy person. The journey is the reward, but it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be uncomfortable at times. It’s going to feel like it’s in your way. But it’s also going to feel amazing. Running is a great example of this. You’re not going to run at a breakneck speed every single day. You’re going to walk. You’re going to run. You’re not going to sprint. But if you keep pushing yourself, you’ll get to where you want to be. And that’s the real payoff.
